A Testament to Jesuit Education

Gonzaga Preparatory and Primary School, located in Kigogo, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, stands as a remarkable testament to the transformative power of Jesuit education. Established in 2008, the school was born out of a deep-seated desire to address the educational needs of disadvantaged children in the Mabibo area and its surroundings.

The Spark of Inspiration: A Visit That Changed Lives

The roots of Gonzaga trace back to 2005, during the 10th anniversary celebrations of Loyola High School in Dar es Salaam. It was during this period that Mr. Patrick Doherty, his wife Mrs. Maureen Doherty, their daughter Siobhan Doherty, and Father Joe Daoust, S.J., accompanied by friends from Our Lady Queen of Peace Foundation, Inc. Canada, visited Tanzania. Their visit, initially intended to celebrate Loyola’s milestone, became a pivotal moment for Jesuit education in the region.

While in Tanzania, the Doherty family and their companions were introduced to the harsh realities faced by orphans and vulnerable children in Mabibo. This was evident through the orphanage center where Loyola students were actively engaged in community service. Witnessing the challenges these children faced, the visitors were profoundly moved, which ignited the spark for a new educational mission.

Laying the Foundation: A Partnership for Change

This encounter led to a partnership between the Jesuit Fathers, the Doherty family, and a network of dedicated supporters from Our Lady Queen of Peace Foundation. Their shared commitment laid the groundwork for what would become Gonzaga Preparatory and Primary School. Construction of the school began shortly after, fueled by the collective efforts of the Jesuits, benefactors, and the local community.

The vision was clear: to create an institution that would not only provide quality education but also serve as a sanctuary of hope and opportunity for underprivileged children. Upon the completion of the school’s construction, Gonzaga Preparatory and Primary School was officially inaugurated on January 26, 2008, by His Eminence Polycarp Cardinal Pengo, the Archbishop of Dar es Salaam Archdiocese. The inauguration marked the beginning of a new chapter in the educational landscape of Dar es Salaam.

The First Students and the Journey of Growth

The school welcomed its first cohort of students on January 14, 2008, even before the official inauguration. Starting with approximately 200 students from pre-standard one to standard three, Gonzaga quickly established itself as an institution committed to academic excellence and holistic development. The initial enrollment reflected the school’s inclusive ethos, admitting children from diverse backgrounds, with a particular focus on orphans and those from disadvantaged families.

Over the years, Gonzaga Preparatory and Primary School has experienced remarkable growth, both in terms of student population and academic offerings. The school has consistently produced successful Standard 7 graduates, many of whom have gone on to excel in Jesuit secondary schools and other prestigious institutions both within Tanzania and internationally. The continuity of academic success has solidified Gonzaga’s reputation as a leading primary education provider in the region.

Leadership: A Pillar of Success

Leadership at Gonzaga has been pivotal in shaping the school’s journey. Since its establishment, the school has been guided by a succession of dedicated directors and head teachers, each contributing uniquely to its development. The directors have included Father Jerome Manyahi, S.J., Father Stephen Marandu, S.J., Father Evarist Shigi, S.J., Father Cypriano Mwithia, S.J., Father Charles Mnubi, S.J., Father Raymond Manyanga, S.J., Father Leander Kabutta, S.J., and currently, Scholastic Humphrey Maganga, S.J. The leadership of these individuals has been instrumental in fostering a culture of academic rigor, spiritual growth, and community service.

Similarly, the role of the head teachers has been crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of the school and the implementation of its educational programs. Among those who have served as head teachers are Sister Georgine Maliro, O.D.N., Sister Eugine Vagheni, O.D.N., Sister Rolande Pendeza, M.M., Sister Marie-Pascaline Kahambu, O.D.N., and the current head, Sister Elisabeth Syaghuswa, O.D.N. Their commitment to educational excellence and student welfare has left a lasting impact on the school community.

A Global Community: Staff, Volunteers, and Exchange Programs

Gonzaga’s vibrant academic environment is enriched by its diverse staff, which includes teachers and personnel from East and Central Africa, South Africa, Europe, and America. The presence of volunteers from the United States and the strong partnership with St. Lawrence of England have further broadened the school’s educational horizons. Through teacher exchange programs, Gonzaga and St. Lawrence have cultivated a mutually beneficial relationship that fosters cross-cultural understanding and pedagogical growth.

Milestones and Celebrations

The school’s journey has been marked by significant events that celebrate its progress and achievements. One such milestone was the 10th Anniversary Celebration held on February 10, 2018. This event was a grand occasion, attended by distinguished guests including the Apostolic Nuncio to Tanzania, His Eminence Most Reverend Archbishop Marek Solczynski, Jesuit Fathers from various missions, government officials, alumni, parents, and students. The celebrations featured a thanksgiving mass, speeches from school leaders, cultural performances, and reflections on the school’s journey over the decade.

Gonzaga has also welcomed international student delegations, such as the visits from St. Ignatius College, Lusaka, Zambia, in 2018, and Boston College High School, Massachusetts, USA, in 2017. These exchanges have provided valuable opportunities for cultural learning and academic collaboration, reinforcing Gonzaga’s commitment to global citizenship.
